Cartwheel and Partners Launch First Indigenous
Peoples' College in Asia

On October 13, 2005, groundbreaking for the Pamulaan Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Education, the first Indigenous Peoples’ College in Asia, was held at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) in Mintal, Davao City.

 

Partners Assisi Development Foundation, ILAWAN Center for Volunteer and Leadership, Office of Sen. Ramon Magsaysay Jr., National Commission for Indigenous Peoples-Region XI, USEP, and Cartwheel envision the center as a school that will provide college education to indigenous peoples (IPs) who dream of an educational program rooted in their life, culture, and aspirations as a people. Starting second semester of School Year 2006-2007, the Pamulaan Center will be offering degree programs AB Applied Anthropology and Participatory Development, BS Indigenous Peoples Educations, AB Peace Building and Multi-Cultural Studies, and BS Agricultural Technology.

Cartwheel and Keystone: Accountability for Social Change

Cartwheel partners with Keystone, an international organization that promotes reporting methodologies encouraging transparency and accountability in achieving social change. As Keystone’s partner, Cartwheel will use the Theory of Change requiring stakeholders’ participation in decisions made by the organization and transparent and open public reporting.

 

As Keystone’s pilot partner in Asia, Cartwheel’s Keystone Report will be launched to the global community through a presentation in South Africa.

 

Keystone invited Cartwheel to be a project partner through a list given by the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC).

Cartwheel fundraising partners

Youth Aid 2004 turns over Php45,000.00 raised by Youth Aid volunteers all over the Philippines during the A Day’s Work campaign in December 2004 inspired by the theme “Inspiring with an Atti2de.” Youth Aid aims to develop the value of service among high school and college students by challenging them to dedicate one day to raise funds for underprivileged children.

 

First Life Guarantee Life Assurance Company (1st Life) launched Bless the Children, 1st Life’s Charity Campaign that places importance on the core value of social responsibility, to raise funds for improved facilities and development materials in the Preschool Program. The campaign raised Php227,000.00 generated from a percentage of insurance policies bought during the campaign period and from individual donations of clients and employees.

 

D&L Industries share their Christmas blessings through their Php20,000.00 fonation to Cartwheel while Explorations Preschool show their concern for indigenous children through care bags with toiletries and school supplies prepared by preschoolers, parents, and friends.  Other funders support the Early Childhood Program: Metrobank Foundation awards a Php50,000.00 grant to Cartwheel for the 3rd consecutive year to sustain projects for the Preschool Program while Chidren’s Hour awards Php489,000.00 for the same project.

 

Society of Performing Arts-Talent Development Guild (SPA-TDG), an organization that provides training and orientation on the performing arts for the community of Overseas Filipino Workers in the Middle East, turned over Php25,000.00 raised from their “A Heart’s Journey” Concert ion Damman, Saudi Arabia.

 

Four groups from the Ateneo de Manila University’s Development Studies Program under the class of Mr. Jerome Montemayor volunteered to adopt Cartwheel for the Resource Mobilization Class project for one semester. The student volunteers used various strategies such as garage sales, selling old newspapers, direct mail, and deployment of coinbanks in raising funds for indigenous communities. Funds raised by the groups ranged from Php9,000.00-50,000.00. These highly energetic volunteers confess to having FUN while implementing their FUNdraising activities!
